We are Project SHINE, a group of four seniors at Colts Neck High School whose goal is to spread the message of acceptance and inclusion for those with special needs. Project SHINE was started as our service learning project as part of the Law & Public Service Learning Center at Colts Neck. SHINE stands for Students Helping Include, Notify and Educate: those are the main goals of our project. Through out the year we have taught at various local elementary schools, peer mentored with kids with special needs in our own school, and ran various fundraisers for the cause.
The last component of Project SHINE is our work with the National Inclusion Project. As soon as we heard about the Project, we knew that they were the perfect organization to align ourselves with and luckily for us, they were immediately receptive to our ideas and began helping us right away. After they posted an article about us on the website, we were contacted by a representative who held a Roll & Stroll in Ohio last year asking if we would be interested in holding the same event in New Jersey, allowing it to become a national fundraiser. It sounded like a great event so we immediately began planning and now we have been working more closely with the National Inclusion Project than ever before, trying our hardest to make the New Jersey Roll and Stroll a success!
The New Jersey Roll & Stroll will be held at Colts Neck High School on Sunday, May 23rd, from 10am-3pm. The day will be filled with tons of great activities for people of all ages. At 9:30am there is an optional breakfast with bagels and coffee provided by Starbucks for only $2, a great way to start off the morning right before the Roll & Stroll begins. Throughout the rest of the day there will be organized games, face painting, tie-dying, music, entertainment and much more! There will be a free lunch barbeque provided by Rosalia's and more snacks and dessert available as well.
How do you become part of this fun-filled day? Just download and print a registration form and start fundraising! Ask your family and friends to sponsor you to walk! Individuals must raise a minimum $15 donation and for families it is $10 per person (excluding children under 5). Simply fill out your information and sponsors and mail it to Colts Neck High School with the donation enclosed, OR bring everything to the Roll & Stroll and register there. For every $5 you raise, you will receive a raffle ticket and more are available to purchase at the event (for guests over 18). There are great prizes available including gift cards to various local restaurants, a free massage, free personal training session, gift baskets, and many more! In addition, the first 300 people to register will receive a free Roll & Stroll T-shirt.
